70's Rock Gig. Charts or Not?
by Geoff
Hello Gabe, I hope all is well
I have a quick question for you. I just took on another band and it's a 70's cover band. I'm used to writing out quick charts for modern pop style songs but when I sat down to actually learn these songs it really occurred to me that the rock songs from that era are a lot more free form and don't have many structured parts. My question is when I'm transcribing these songs, is it important to get all of the beats and fills correct? I know that you have done quite a few covers from this era so I'm guessing you have some good insight on this topic. I'm just thinking it's going to be incredibly time consuming to learn and transcribe the part verbatim as opposed to getting it close to the part and just focusing on learning the big fills when I have 30+ songs to learn.
Thanks! Geoff
